Sonia is in… Now what?

Judge Sonia SotomayorJudge Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed today by the Senate 68 in favor and 31 against in a historic decision that will change the face of the Supreme Court for years to come. Now what? That only changes the face of the Supreme Court and even there she will be considered by many as “a minority.”

It is indeed an important moment in the history of this country, but it is just that, a moment as it was Obama’s and many others who will come after them.

We need an ongoing and ever-lasting impression in this culture, not a one-time deal in an institution mainly controlled by white males. An institution -regarded by many as the ultimate and absolute word interpreting the US Constitution- that has seen its unfair share of sitting racists and supremacists over the years.

This is just a moment in history and we are all proud of it of course. But we need consistency. This wasn’t a victory either, as victory is only measured by how many have failed, and so far, the answer to that is pretty obvious.

Will Sonia Sotomayor affect the American culture?

The media still has a hard time with Hispanic names; at least with Sonia Sotomayor, TV and radio reporters and anchors still stumble when saying her last name, often calling her “Sotomayer” or even “Sattomayor.” We need presence in the governmental system no doubt about that but in the media we need “mayor” authority as well.

And we should not take credit for her achievement either, as it is hers and only hers. The way to get “there” is by doing our part as well and also achieving our own goals.

Hey, Latino, don’t wait for another Sonia Sotomayor to get to the Supreme Court to make a difference.
