If it sounds like a man and looks like a man… In about three weeks we’ll be able to complete that puzzle as international track officials in Berlin try to figure out if South African Caster Semenya may have lied about her-or his- gender.
Her androgynous looks have raised eyebrows everywhere and rumors of her real sexuality still linger, arguing that she is a man and lied to get into the race, winning the 800-meter race World Championships in Berlin.
Others have even said that Semenya, 18, was born a hermaphrodite and that a sex change operation gone wrong is the reason for the coarse, manly looks and deep voice.
Her parents are outraged and have said over and over that she is a she and nothing else.
Old practices seem to rule the world of sports and Semenya may have been a victim of the Western mentality that all sports women should wear swim suits and appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
When will it be Semenya’s chance to appear on a spread wearing a two-piece? Tim Gun may have the answer to that question. Or maybe is an impossible one to answer.
While we await the results of Semenya’s gender tests, let’s go back in history and check out those female athletes that didn’t wait long to show off more than their athletic moves.
